There is nothing wrong with indulging in a little Easter-themed candy. There’s also nothing wrong with providing your family with some fun, creative and healthier alternatives. Use these ideas for Easter activities and treats to make everyone hoppy:

  • Fill baskets with apples, carrots, bananas, natural fruit snacks, dried fruit and almond butter packets.
  • Use individually wrapped candies so you can better control the amount and types of sugar.
  • Dip strawberries, sliced bananas and grapes in melted dark chocolate to give your kids the best of both worlds. Make sure the dark chocolate you choose is at least 70 percent cacao.
  • Animal-shaped snack crackers (think fish- and rabbit-shaped) are a nice contrast to all that sweet stuff.
  • Limit the sugary treats to items that will only fit in plastic Easter eggs.
  • Encourage more outside playtime with sidewalk chalk or a jump rope. Books also make a nice, quiet gift.
  • Gift cards to their favorite app store allow the kids to check out a new game or provide them currency for in-app purchases in their favorite games.
  • Create your own pastel-colored play dough, it’s easy:
    • Mix together a cup of flour, ¼ tsp. salt, ½ cup water and food coloring in a mixing bowl. Add more flour to make it thicker/less sticky or more water to help loosen it up.
  • A favorite in our family is the holiday scavenger hunt. Place a few numbered clues in their baskets that lead to more clues until they eventually track down the prize.
  • Consider upgrading their fitness gear or play clothes, then go outside and play.
