[Did you know?]
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 17% (or 12.5 million) of children and teens ages 2 to 19 are obese.
We started the Movin and Groovin Fitness for Kids video series because at 9 years old, our son, Austin, was 5 feet tall and weighed 140 pounds. When the kids went out for PE at school, they would run around the track, and he couldn’t even make it a quarter of the way. He was playing football, baseball and hockey but spent most of his time on the bench because he couldn’t run.
We took Austin to an endocrinologist, who said, Those are fine activities, but they’re not exercise. You need to get his heart rate up. Next, we took him to a dietitian, and he stopped gaining weight, but he wasnt getting fit. No health club would take him because of his age. We looked for videos, but there wasnt anything for children. We were very frustrated.
Finally, in 2000, we decided we were going to do something about this. We took a significant part of our savings and hired a music team, a set designer and a production team to make our first exercise videos. We composed music in genres that would be interesting to kids. We included kids of all shapes and sizes in the videos so everybody would feel like they could do the moves.
The kids including our son lost weight. Now were in more than 700 schools in the U.S. and in 14 countries internationally.
Sams Club has been essential to our business. We get everything there, from our DVD cases and office supplies to video equipment and healthy foods. Sams Club is a major component of not just our company, but our family. Theres always something we need at one of the Clubs near us. Sams Club has been an important part of our success, and we have paid it forward to all the kids who benefit from our videos.
